WANTED: GREAT LIBRARIANS

Nominations are now being accepted for the 2004 Emerson Greenaway Award, which recognizes individuals who have had a “demonstrated impact on the library field in the New England region.”

Established by the New England Library Association in 1988, the award honors Emerson Greenaway, an innovator in library organization and practice in the 1940’s and 1950’s. Mr. Greenaway received the first award, and subsequent recipients include Eleanor Hashem, Donald Vincent, Ann Flowers, Richard Olsen, Ching-Chi-Chen, Liz Futas,  Anne Reynolds, Patrick Klinck, Marshall Keyes, Margo Crist, and last year’s recipient as well as originator of the award, Kris Kardokas.

Nominees must be, or have been, members of NELA. He or she should have made a major contribution to the field of librarianship in New England, such as:

  • Development of outstanding services in a field of expertise, such as administration, reference services, technical services, etc.
  • Involvement with developing library cooperation in New England
  • Outstanding leadership in the field.

Nominations include a written statement chronicling the nominee’s achievements, his or her resume  and three letters of support, at least two of which are from persons outside the nominee’s home state.  The award may be given posthumously.  Nominations must be submitted by May 30, 2004.

Criteria

I. Since NELA represents the New England region, nominees for the Emerson Greenaway Award must have had an impact on the library field in the New England region.

II.  The nominee must be, or have been, a member of the New England Library Association.  If the nominee no longer lives in New England, he or she does not have to be a current member of the Association.

III.  The nominee should have made, or be making, a major contribution to the field of librarianship in New England, such as:

A.   Development of outstanding services in a field of expertise, such as administration, reference services, technical services, etc.

B.    Involvement with developing library cooperation in New England.

C.    Outstanding leadership in the field.

Documentation Checklist

Your nomination will be the only source for determining the accomplishments of the nominee;  the committee will judge only on the basis of this written statement and any supporting documentation you provide.

Please attach to this application:

  • A written statement of one or two pages in length relating the nominee's accomplishments to the criteria for the award.  State specifically which field their expertise is in, and give examples of their contributions, including examples of programs, projects, and writings.  Describe haw their involvement with library cooperation has gone beyond the boundaries of their own state and has impacted at least two or three New England states.  Cite examples of their leadership in the field.
  • A resume, curriculum vitae, or equivalent list of positions held and accomplishments achieved by the nominee.
  • At least three letters of support, at least 2 of which should be from persons outside of the nominee's home state.  These letters should support the nomination.

The Executive Board of the New England Library Association will decide who shall receive the award.  The Association reserves the right not to present the award in any given year.  The award is presented at the NELA Annual Conference.

Nomination for the award can be made by any NELA member or any New England state library association.  The deadline for submission is May 30, 2004.
