Sitting on his sofa, a glass of whisky in his hand; the golden reflections of it spinning to the rhythm of the ice cubes. Only a few more sips of this nectar that slides down the throat and awakens the senses.
Makes you want to, doesn’t it?
A Whiskey is appreciated and not all can be appreciated equally. Before giving you the top 10 most expensive whiskeys in the world it is essential to ask yourself what is Whiskey?

What is whisky?

Whisky is a cereal brandy. It is aged in an oak barrel for a minimum of 3 years and must be aged at 40°. The cereal used and the assemblies allow them to be classified as follows:

– Single Malt: Cereal brandy (malted barley) from a single distillery

– Blended Malt (Pure Malt): a blend of Single Malt

– Blended Whisky: a blend of Single Malt with grain whisky (distilled with a wheat or corn base)

What is the whisky making process?

As explained above, whisky is a brandy and is obtained by a distillation process. In this process the key is fermentation because it gives the tempo for the whole process. For whisky, the cereals are distilled in a still, i.e. the sugars contained in the grains are extracted and transformed into alcohol using yeast.
It is exactly the same process as for all other alcohols with grapes (Cognac, Armagnac), apples (Calvados) or even sugar cane (Rum).
The last stage is the ageing in oak barrels, of which there are more than fifty varieties. Small barrels favour a faster development of aromas, due to a ratio of wood-alcohol to wood.
The bouquet of whiskies is the result of complex chemical reactions between the components of the wood, the distillate, the environment, the weather conditions and their fusion.
Now that we know what whisky is and how to obtain a good whisky, the real question is to know how to taste it.

How do you enjoy a good whisky?

Far be it from me to explain how to taste whisky as a professional, but I can give you some tips to impress your guests or hosts.
Let’s start with the beginning which is the container. You have to know how to choose the right glass because the visual aspect is just as important as the taste and putting your senses in the best conditions allows them to work correctly.
A not too wide glass with a tight neck to be able to concentrate the aromas and give yourself the space to smell them.

In a second step we will focus on the aspect of whisky. The colour and reflections give all the necessary information about the maturation of the whisky as well as the tears that form on the walls of the glass.
The more oily the whisky is in texture and the slow drops to drop into the glass the higher the degrees are.

Finally, and not only for wine consumers, smell it, taste it. Indeed, do not hesitate to smell the aroma; a quick nose hit for the most fleeting aromas; retract the distance with the whisky: let it dominate you!
Let a sip slip on your tongue and line your mouth with this drink. You must at least keep your whisky in your mouth for 10 seconds to be able to enjoy it. It is important to let the aromas develop in the mouth and let the pleasure rise without measure.
To your drinks!

What to offer if you can afford it?

Whisky is a reference alcoholic drink and some brands are among the most luxurious in the world. The pleasure of this prestigious beverage comes at a price, however, and some bottles cost a real fortune. Here is an overview with our top 10 most expensive whiskies in the world:
